FIBROMYALGIA: Managing Pain Naturally

Fibromyalgia is a neurosensory disorder characterized by alterations in the way the central nervous system interprets and processes stimuli; the system may interpret harmless stimuli as painful and can respond excessively to pain.

This condition has typically been more prevalent in young or middle-aged women, and its main symptom is widespread chronic pain that persists for at least three months and may be accentuated at tender points. Occasionally, this is accompanied by chronic fatigue and frequent sleep disturbances.

Other common indicators of fibromyalgia include sensitivity, stiffness, mood disorders (depression or anxiety), cognitive difficulties (lack of concentration, forgetfulness, and disorganized thinking). Migraine and tension headaches are also present in more than half of individuals with fibromyalgia. Many people suffering from this chronic condition experience a variety of other unexplained symptoms such as:

  • Irritable bowel sensations.

  • Pelvic and urinary issues.

  • Weight fluctuations.

  • Sexual dysfunction.

Although these symptoms often come and go spontaneously, they are generally intense enough to affect daily functioning. It is important to highlight that each person diagnosed with fibromyalgia is affected differently, so their experiences may vary.

Now, there are natural alternatives that have been linked to improvements in symptoms and overcoming the deficits that are common among patients with fibromyalgia. The most relevant ones are:

Magnesium
Magnesium is an essential mineral and a cofactor for a significant number of enzymes. It is involved in muscle relaxation, blood clotting, and the body's main energy molecule. Magnesium supplementation has been shown to help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia, making it a frequently recommended supplement.

Low circulating levels of magnesium may be involved in the development of fibromyalgia in some individuals, so patients with this condition should consider testing their red blood cell magnesium levels to ensure they are not deficient in this important nutrient.

Provide your body with all the minerals and nutrients it needs with our 7 Minerals formula, and help balance the vital processes of the body.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Clinical studies have found that some patients with fibromyalgia often have low levels of melatonin, which can lead to disruptions in the sleep cycle. Additionally, patients with fibromyalgia appear to secrete less melatonin at night compared to healthy controls, making supplementation advisable.

Rest better and promote restorative sleep with Neuro Sleep.

S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe)
S-adenosylmethionine is a physiological molecule present in all tissues and fluids of the body, affecting their function, stability, and activity. Supplementation with SAMe has been linked to improvements in morning stiffness, fatigue, sleep quality, and clinical disease activity among patients with fibromyalgia. Furthermore, other studies have shown that SAMe provides relief from depression, which sometimes occurs in people with fibromyalgia.

Neuro Fit is a formula made with SAMe and other ingredients that help provide essential nutrients to combat chronic fatigue and support brain function.

Chlorella

Chlorella is a genus of single-celled green algae. It grows in freshwater and contains high concentrations of important vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, nucleic acids, amino acids, enzymes, and other substances. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated when used as a supplement to alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid in human nutrition, and the body cannot produce it, so it must be obtained from food. The potential usefulness of 5-HTP is supported by data indicating impaired tryptophan metabolism in patients with fibromyalgia.

Benefit from the power of this amino acid with our formulas Neuro Base, Neuro AS, and Vita Yeast.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Coenzyme Q-10 is a vitamin-like substance found throughout the body. It is an essential component of healthy mitochondrial function, as well as a powerful antioxidant. Researchers point out that low levels of this coenzyme may play a role in the development of fibromyalgia symptoms because Co-Q10 has been found to be deficient in the blood cells of many patients with fibromyalgia. Supplementation with Co-Q10 has been linked to significant improvements in symptoms.

Acetyl-L-carnitine
Acetyl-L-carnitine is an amino acid derived from L-Carnitine. While they share the same properties, acetyl-L-carnitine has some particularities, such as offering greater protection to the nervous system than other forms of carnitine.

It has been suggested that fibromyalgia may be associated with metabolic alterations, including a carnitine deficiency.

You can find acetyl-L-carnitine in our Brain Life formula.

Omega 3

Omega-3 fatty acids can only be synthesized to a limited extent by the human body, but they are vital for normal metabolism. Omega-3 modulates various cellular properties and has been shown to reduce inflammation. Among patients with fibromyalgia, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to significant improvements in pain severity, tender point count, fatigue, and depression.

Vitamin D
Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome have impaired mobility and, therefore, less exposure to sunlight. This contributes to the vitamin D deficiency commonly observed in this population.

We recommend our Vitamin D3, essential for achieving proper body balance and improving overall health.

Finally, the cause of fibromyalgia is unknown; however, it has been linked to inflammatory disorders, possibly mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances.
