It is a chemical compound derived from 2-methyl-naphthoquinone. It is a lipophilic and hydrophobic vitamin. Its main function is to enable blood clotting processes. In fact, its name comes from the first letter of the Danish word "Koagulation" (coagulation). It consists of phylloquinone (vitamin K1) and menaquinone (vitamin K2).

It is also known by the following names:

Phytomenadione, Antihemorrhagic vitamin, Vitamin K.

Some of its properties are:

Antianemic:
It promotes the generation of red blood cells.

Anti-arteriosclerotic:
Due to its ability to inhibit the formation of atheromatous plaques in the arteries.

Anti-hemorrhagic:
Because of its essential mechanism to promote blood clotting.

Metabolic:
It is involved in the carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in proteins that form Gla domains, which are essential in blood clotting, bone metabolism, and vascular biology.

Osteogenic:
Thanks to its ability to promote bone health by strengthening bones, increasing calcium absorption, and enhancing bone mineral density.
