It is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is widely distributed around the world and is generally cultivated for use in food. It consists of lysine, fiber, apiol, apigenin, furocoumarins, vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin A, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, alkaloids, and flavonoids.

 

It is also known by the following names:

Celery, Stone celery, Lingustico do Reino, Lingustico peregrino, Parsley, Perexil, Petroselino, Petrosenilum crispum, Prexil.

 

Some of its properties are:
Anesthetic:
Because it alleviates pain due to the action of vitamin C and zinc.

Antianemic:
Due to its iron content.

Antianorexic:
Because it stimulates appetite.

Antiatherosclerotic:
Since the lysine it contains helps to thin the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots.

Anti-inflammatory:
Thanks to the luteolin and vitamin C it contains.

Antineoplastic:
Due to its content of apigenin, which inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It also contains flavonoids and myristicin that neutralize cancer-causing agents and prevent their appearance.

Antioxidant:
Because of its vitamin C and flavonoid content.

Antipyretic:
Thanks to the action of apiol.

Antirachitic and Antiosteoporotic:
Because it provides calcium, and also lysine, which helps to absorb and distribute calcium.

Digestive and Carminative:
Since it contains fiber that improves intestinal transit and nutrient absorption.

Diuretic:
Because it increases urination due to the inhibition of the Na+/K+-ATP pump, promoting the excretion of sodium and water, and increasing potassium reabsorption.

Emmenagogue:
Because it promotes menstruation due to its content of myristicin and apiol, which stimulate uterine contractions.

Stimulant:
Due to its ability to increase estrogen production.

Immunostimulant:
Due to its vitamin C content.

Lipotropic:
Since the lysine it contains is involved in fat metabolism.
